Murrine Collection Reinterprets Historic Venetian Glassware

Launching its latest Murrine designer collection, leading tilemaker Trend returns to its Venetian glass-making roots, bringing a series of exquisitely intricate decorative patterns to the modern world of glass mosaic. The new range of micro-tile compositions has been inspired by classic murrine designs, traditionally made by layering up coloured glass canes and often incorporated into fine art paperweights and blown glass vessels.

Now, Trend has reinterpreted this ancient art into a bold collection of circular and square pre-formatted mosaic panels, using its piccolo formato 1cm square, glass tiles that are perfect for complex patterns and hand-cut pieces for creating curves and fluid strokes. The techniques employed also celebrate a link with the Trend Group’s past, since its 19th century Orsoni factory, renowned for the production of gold and glass mosaics, is still sited in Venice and its founder, Angelo Orsoni, was born on the island of Murano, for centuries the home of murrine glassware.

Lending a contemporary aesthetic to a treasured art form, the Trend Murrine Collection is offered in nine different styles that are perfect for mosaic features, modular panels and friezes, which are suitable for interior and exterior walls, as well as residential and light-traffic commercial flooring. Pre-mounted on the company’s innovative Trend Plus polyurethane backing mesh for faster and easier installation, it is also suitable for wet areas like bathrooms, shower cubicles, spas and ornamental fountains.

The three mosaic styles, Burano, Murano and Torcello are named after islands in the Venetian Lagoon and each is offered in different colourways. In addition to time-honoured patterns and a well defined finished effect that eliminates the pixelated look, the Murrine Collection is thoroughly eco-friendly, made from up to 78% post-consumer recycled glass. Technical performance is impressive too, boasting internationally accredited resistance to water absorption, chemical agents, thermal shock, colour fade and freezing temperatures. The tiles are also DIN rated for slip resistance and the close-spaced grout lines contribute further anti-slip properties.
