Winner of the Domus + KAZA Concrete design competition announced

Cristina Vezzini, winner of the Domus and Kaza concrete tile competition
Domus and KAZA Concrete is pleased to announce Cristina Vezzini as the winner of its inaugural concrete tile design competition. Her design will now be produced and added to the range of KAZA tiles available.

Cristina, a recent graduate from the Royal College of Art and owner of London based ceramic and glass company Vezzini & Chen, won the award for her striking PENTA design, inspired by the simplicity and intricacy of nature.

Launched during the London Design Festival 2014, the competition brief was to design a range of practical yet aesthetically pleasing, decorative concrete tiles that take in to account the idea of ‘form before function’. Entrants, who ranged from architecture and design students to practicing architects and interior or product designers, were also asked to consider the qualities of concrete in design that other materials don’t necessarily have.

The winning PENTA design is a modular wall tile that consists of irregular polygons and angles of varying heights creating a sense of depth and texture. Its vibrant, geometric finish entertains the eye with a multitude of light and dark reflections that create layered patterns similar to natural scenery or crystal formations. The judges voted unanimously for PENTA, praising Cristina’s thoughtful and detailed illustrations, creating a design which will really showcase KAZA’s unique concrete capabilities.

Christina commented: “I’m extremely delighted to have won the Domus + KAZA Concrete competition. It was a fantastic brief that enabled me to create a striking yet functional design. I’m looking forward to seeing my designs produced and I’d like to thank Domus + KAZA Concrete for this great opportunity.”

Sam Frith, at Domus, said: “Through this competition, we wanted to explore and push the boundaries of new forms of concrete tiling, which is increasingly popular for residential and commercial projects alike. Teaming up with KAZA, we engaged the best established and upcoming talent and the end result was an extremely high quality of entries, and a very worthy winner. We congratulate Cristina Vezzini for her inspired design, which will now become a reality.”

Joseph Sung was also highly commended for his V&A collection inspired by the ancient pyramids.
